Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has finally made its way to Disney+, and along with its debut, the film’s official placement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline has been confirmed. According to a report by The Direct, the movie takes place after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and before Secret Invasion, aligning with the release order of these Phase Five projects.

Originally slated for a May 2020 premiere, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 experienced delays due to the temporary firing and rehiring of director James Gunn. But fans can now enjoy the entire Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy on Disney’s streaming service, where it joined its predecessors.

Following its cinematic run, the blockbuster is also available on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra Run, and DVD, featuring behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast, crew, and James Gunn, as well as some deleted scenes that didn’t make it to the final cut.

The third installment of the Guardians franchise was a massive hit, garnering over $845 million at the global box office against its $250 million budget. Although it fell short of surpassing Vol. 2, which made $869 million, it outperformed Quantumania, which surprisingly incurred losses, becoming the first non-pandemic MCU film to do so. Critics praised Vol. 3, giving it an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, applauding it as an emotional and fitting conclusion to the original superhero group’s journey.

For some of the key cast members, Vol. 3 marked their final appearance in the MCU. Dave Bautista, who played Drax, confirmed his departure from Marvel in January, while director James Gunn will now shift his focus towards his projects within the DC Universe, including the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie. Meanwhile, Zoe Saldana has hinted at moving on from her role as Gamora after Vol. 3.

As for the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise, there are currently no plans for another installment. However, James Gunn expressed his hope that the remaining members of the group would make appearances in other MCU projects. Additionally, he recently teased the possibility of a potential movie centered around Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/Star-Lord character at some point down the line.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 now streaming on Disney+ and leaving a lasting impact on fans and critics alike, it’s clear that the Guardians’ journey has come to an end, but their legacy within the MCU is set to live on.
